Trevor Hastie is a South African-American statistician and computer scientist, currently teaching Mathematical Sciences & Statistics at Stanford University. He is renowned for his contributions to applied statistics, especially in the field of machine learning, data mining, and bioinformatics.

Trevor was born in South Africa and moved to the USA to join the doctoral program at Stanford University in 1980. He then returned to his home country for a short amount of time to work at the South African Medical Research Council.

In 1986, Trevor came back to the USA and joined the AT&T Bell Laboratories for 9 years. He’s a Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Professor of Statistics at the Stanford University.

Hastie has written several books in his field, such as The Elements of Statistical Learning: Data Mining, Inference. He has also been listed as an ISI Highly Cited Author in Mathematics by the ISI Web of Knowledge.
