Ajit Jain is a Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, the holding company ran by Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. Ajit Jain is the Chief of Insurance Operations and shares the vice-chair position with the group’s energy chief, Greg Abel, since January 2018.
Jain studied Mechanical Engineering in India and then worked as a salesman at IBM for three years at IBM, until its local operations were shut down.
Jain moved to the USA in 1978, earning an MBA from Harvard University, and joined McKinsey & Co. After a short amount of time, he returned back to India, married and then moved back to the US.
In 1986, Ajit joined Berkshire Hathaway and started working in their insurance operations business, although he lacked experience. Buffett said in his 2014 shareholder’s letters that “Ajit Jain created out of nothing an immense reinsurance
business that produced both a huge “float” and a large underwriting gain“.
Years went by and at the beginning of 2018, Ajit was appointed Berkshire Hathaway’s vice-chair and joined the Board of Directors. He’s considered a top contender to succeed Warren Buffett as the company’s CEO.
Jain is also a philanthropist, founding the Jain Foundation in 2005 – a non-profit organization that research muscular dystrophies caused by dysferlin protein deficiency, a condition that Jain’s son has.
