Greg Abel is one of the vice-chairmen of Berkshire Hathaway, the American conglomerate that works as an umbrella for multiple companies and one of the most expensive publicly traded stocks of all time, run by Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. Abel is the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Energy and non-insurance operations.

Greg grew up in Canada and earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Alberta, after switching from studying finance. He trained as a chartered accountant with PriceWaterHouseCoopers, where he also worked until 1992.

He then joined CalEnergy, a geothermal electricity producer that acquired MidAmerican Energy in 1999 and adopted its name. MidAmerican Energy was later acquired by Berkshire Hathaway. Greg served as chairman and president of MidAmerican, and the company was renamed Berkshire Hathaway Energy in 2014.

Since he was appointed vice-chair, a position he shares with Ajit Jain, it’s been vehiculated that one of them may succeed Buffett and lead the company.

In one of his shareholder’s letters, Buffett said that: “Ajit Jain and Greg Abel are proven performers who would probably be under-described as “world-class.” “World-leading” would be the description I would choose. In some important ways, each is a better business executive than Buffett.”.
