The claim at the center of Gavin Menzies's account is that a Chinese fleet under Emperor Zhu Di's eunuch admirals sailed on 8 March 1421, reached America about seventy years before Columbus and went around the globe a century ahead of Magellan. Menzies, who spent fifteen years tracing the voyages, says the ships came home to political chaos, were left to rot, and had their records destroyed. He builds the case from ancient maps, navigation, astronomy and the accounts of Chinese and later European navigators, told informally through vignettes of his own travels. Translations appeared in dozens of languages, and sales passed a million copies.
