About the book
Ernest Hemingway's 1929 novel is narrated by Frederic Henry, an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian Army's ambulance corps during the First World War. Set on the Italian front, it follows his love affair with Catherine Barkley, an English nurse, amid the fighting. Hemingway drew on his own time as a Red Cross volunteer in Italy, and the story is divided into five sections, or books. It became his first best seller and secured his standing as a modern American writer. Stage, film and television adaptations followed, among them films in 1932 and 1957.
Kapwing co-founder Julia Enthoven, describing her reading in an interview, named it among the classics she loves.
