About the book
At the center of Paul Tremblay's horror novel are the Barretts, a suburban New England family under financial and emotional strain, whose fourteen-year-old daughter Marjorie starts to show signs of acute schizophrenia that her doctors cannot halt. As their home turns into a house of horrors, her parents reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest, Father Wanderly, who believes Marjorie is possessed and suggests an exorcism. He also brings in a production company eager to film the family's ordeal for a reality television show. The story is told by Marjorie's younger sister, Merry, fifteen years later. Tremblay dedicated the book to Shirley Jackson, and it won the Bram Stoker Award for Novel.
Stephen King said it scared the hell out of him, adding that he is not easy to frighten.
