About the book
Set mainly in Atlanta in the late 20th century, Tom Wolfe's second novel is a satire centered on Charlie Croker, a real estate mogul of Atlanta high society whose plantation and skyscraper face repossession because he cannot repay his bank loans. At the same time a rumor spreads that a black star athlete, Fareek Fanon, raped a young white heiress, a rumor that could set off race riots across metropolitan Atlanta. The cast, black and white, comes from many of Georgia's social classes. Farrar, Straus & Giroux published it in 1998, and Netflix adapted it as a miniseries in 2024.
Mohnish Pabrai praises how well it chronicles the South of his own time, calling it a wonderful book.
