About the book
A badly hurt James wakes on a flight to Minneapolis with no memory of how he got there. His brother meets him and takes him to a twelve-step rehabilitation clinic. James Frey is 23, an alcoholic for a decade and addicted to crack for three years, and wanted by police in three states. He also endures root canals without anesthesia. His fellow patients include a judge, a mobster, a fragile former prostitute he is forbidden to speak to and a boxer who was once a world champion. James rejects the counselors' formulas and blames only his own choices. Sold first as a memoir, the book was later marketed as a semi-fictional novel after Frey admitted many parts were fabricated.
Rich Roll said it shook him like no book before it, arriving when he was only a few years sober, and Ella Botting, founder of CyberWomen, said Frey's fall to rock bottom and his way back hit close to home.

The book is a semi-fictional novel/ memoir that reflects on Frey’s battle with addiction. His story really hit home with me, he reached rock-bottom which I think I have or nearly have on a number of occasions, and overcame it. I really resonate with those kind of stories (another book is Scar Tissue), they stay with me and inspire me daily. When I feel burnt out, I think of Frey’s journey and it reminds me to take a step back and re-focus on my self-care.
