About the book
In 1930s New York, assistant district attorney Eunice Carter, the first Black woman to serve as a prosecutor in Manhattan, sets out to bring down Lucky Luciano, who heads the city's five largest crime families. Earlier prosecutors went after gambling, drug dealing, bootlegging, loan sharking or tax evasion; Eunice sees a way in through the mob's role in prostitution. She cannot reach Luciano on her own. Polly Adler, who built a high-class brothel, turns against him once he puts the women who work for her in danger. Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray, co-authors of The Personal Librarian, follow the alliance of the two women, a prosecutor and a madam on opposite sides of the law.
Reese Witherspoon made it a Reese's Book Club pick in June 2026.
