About the book
Born out of wedlock in the Caribbean and largely self-taught, Alexander Hamilton rose from nothing to serve as George Washington's aide-de-camp, lead the Federalist Party, found the Bank of New York, write part of The Federalist Papers and become the nation's first Treasury Secretary. Ron Chernow's biography argues that Hamilton's ambition came from patriotism as much as self-interest, and that much of America's political and economic strength grew from ideas he fought for. For his research Chernow read over 22,000 pages of the statesman's own papers and visited places tied to his family. The book won the first George Washington Book Prize and inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical Hamilton.
James Mattis included it in his list of favorite books in the appendix of Call Sign Chaos, and Ryan Holiday named it among the very best books he read in 2015.

This is the best book I've read in the last year for entrepreneurship. It's about the greatest startup in the world: America. And how a young immigrant with no resources except hard work and intelligence overcame overwhelming adversity to become a critical founder. Hugely inspiring, with many lessons on leadership, persuasion, human politics and management.

A non-business book that’s one of my favourites in the past year is Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Chernow distilled the impact that Alexander Hamilton has had on our world in a fascinating and intriguing manner. Hamilton is a thought-provoking individual, since he had such a tremendous impact on North America during his lifetime. It’s quite inspirational to learn about Alexander Hamilton’s effect on politics and economics, and the manner in which he made this impact.
