About the book
The actors, writers, directors and others who made HBO's crime drama The Wire tell its story in Jonathan Abrams's oral history, which runs from the show's conception to its end and its legacy. Abrams had access to every key actor and writer. The series, whose final episode aired in 2008, took on the failures of the drug war and the criminal justice system and the bias built into policing and other institutions. Several cast members, among them Michael B. Jordan, Idris Elba and Dominic West, went on to become major stars, while creators and writers such as David Simon and Richard Price gained followings of their own. Universities now teach it in courses from sociology to film theory.
