About the book
Set in a future where human consciousness is stored in cortical stacks and downloaded into new bodies, called sleeves, Richard K. Morgan's 2002 cyberpunk novel imagines a society where the rich can live almost indefinitely. Takeshi Kovacs, a former U.N. Envoy turned criminal, is killed on the colony planet Harlan's World and given a long sentence in stack storage. Meanwhile, in Bay City, formerly San Francisco, a wealthy Meth named Laurens Bancroft has died and been resleeved with no memory of the two days before. A police officer believes it was suicide, but Bancroft is convinced he was murdered and has Kovacs released into a new body to investigate. Netflix adapted it as a television series in 2018.
Marc Andreessen called it the place to start with Morgan, his first and perhaps most inventive novel, and likened it to Robert Heinlein crossed with Raymond Chandler.

Altered Carbon is definitely the place to start, Morgan’s first and perhaps most inventive novel, Robert Heinlein meets Raymond Chandler—and first of a trio.
