The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

Michael Chabon's novel opens in New York in 1939, when 19-year-old Joe Kavalier, an artist trained in magic and escape tricks, arrives as a refugee after getting out of Nazi-occupied Prague. He moves in with his 17-year-old cousin, Sammy Clay, in Brooklyn, and wants to make money fast so he can bring his family to safety. Sammy, an aspiring writer, hopes to profit from the new craze for comic books. Together they create the Escapist, an anti-fascist superhero. Many events draw on the lives of real comic-book creators such as Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, and the novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
