An American Marriage

Tayari Jones's fourth novel centres on Celestial and Roy, a middle-class African-American couple newly married and living in Atlanta, she an artist on the verge of a promising career. Their life together is torn apart when Roy is arrested and handed a twelve-year sentence for a crime Celestial is sure he did not commit. Andre, her childhood friend, was the best man at their wedding. Roy is a young executive, and the novel explores the inner lives of three people held together and pulled apart by forces they cannot control. The novel was an Oprah's Book Club pick and won the 2019 Women's Prize for Fiction.
