David Nasaw's biography follows Andrew Carnegie from modest beginnings in Scotland, where he was born in 1835 to an impoverished linen weaver, to Pittsburgh, which he reached at thirteen. Starting as a bobbin boy in a cotton factory, he founded Carnegie Steel and became the richest man in the world, then spent his remaining years giving the fortune away and campaigning for international peace. Nasaw explains how the early money was made, why Carnegie chose to part with it, and how he campaigned against the United States entering the Spanish-American War and used friendships with presidents and prime ministers in the cause of peace. New material includes unpublished chapters of Carnegie's autobiography, family letters, diaries and his prenuptial agreement.
