About the book
George Orwell's satirical novella takes the form of a beast fable set on Manor Farm in England. The animals live neglected under Mr Jones, a lazy and drunken farmer. After the old boar Old Major calls for the overthrow of humans, two young boars, Snowball and Napoleon, lead a revolt that drives Jones out, and the animals rename the place Animal Farm under the rule that all animals are equal. Orwell said the story was inspired by the Russian Revolution and the Stalinist era, and he wrote it while Britain was allied with the Soviet Union in wartime. In 1996 it received a Retrospective Hugo Award.
Jordan B. Peterson included it in the suggested readings for Maps of Meaning. Examine.com co-founder Sol Orwell named it in an interview among the books that had the biggest impact on him.
