Anne Frank

During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, in July 1942, 13-year-old Anne Frank and her Jewish family left their Amsterdam home and went into hiding in a secret annex behind a bookcase in the building where her father, Otto, worked. Her diary records two years in those rooms, shared with another family: hunger, boredom, the strain of cramped quarters and the constant fear of discovery. The Gestapo arrested the group on 4 August 1944, and Anne died months later in Bergen-Belsen. Otto, the only family member to survive the Holocaust, published the diary after his secretaries Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl saved it. Written in Dutch, it has been translated into more than 70 languages.
