About the book
Jeff VanderMeer's novel opens the Southern Reach series in Area X, a coastal zone closed off for decades and reclaimed by nature. Some earlier expeditions ended in mass suicide or gunfire, and the members of the eleventh came back changed and all died of cancer. The twelfth expedition is four unnamed women: a biologist who narrates through her field journal, an anthropologist, a surveyor and a psychologist who leads them. They must map the land, record everything and avoid contamination. The novel won the Nebula Award and the Shirley Jackson Award, and inspired a loose 2018 film.
It appears on a list of 22 books Stephen King recommended on Twitter, where he called the Southern Reach trilogy creepy and fascinating.
