About the book

Raymond Arsenault traces the life of Arthur Ashe, the Richmond-born player who broke the color barrier in men's tennis and became a civil rights activist. Barred by Jim Crow rules from playing white opponents, Ashe earned a scholarship to UCLA, in 1963 became the first African American to represent the US in the Davis Cup, and went on to win Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Much of the book deals with his life off the court as an activist, philanthropist, broadcaster, writer and businessman. It also covers the heart condition that brought surgeries and transfusions, one of them leaving him HIV-positive, and his AIDS activism before his death in 1993. Arsenault did more than one hundred interviews.

Barack Obama included it in the best of 2018 list he shared on Facebook.
