The tension between feminist convictions and enjoying things that appear to clash with them is the thread running through Roxane Gay's 2014 essay collection. Gay, a cultural critic, novelist and professor, mixes personal experience, including her upbringing as a Haitian-American, with commentary on popular culture, from the Sweet Valley High series to Django Unchained, The Help and Girls. The essays are grouped in five sections: Me; Gender and Sexuality; Race and Entertainment; Politics, Gender and Race; and Back to Me. In an interview with Time, Gay said the essays show how feminism shapes her life and what it is like to live in the world as a woman. It reached the New York Times paperback nonfiction best-seller list.

It’s hard to pick an all-time favorite because, as time goes by and I grow older, my reading list becomes more “mature” and I find myself interested in new things. I probably have a personal favorite book for each stage of my life. Right now I’m absolutely blown away by everything Roxane Gay wrote, especially Bad Feminist.
