About the book

Gary Taubes reconstructs the cold fusion controversy of 1989 to 1991, which began when two scientists at the University of Utah announced on March 23, 1989 that they had achieved nuclear fusion at room temperature. A popular retelling rather than a scholarly study, it rests on interviews with more than 260 scientists, administrators and journalists. Taubes details what Stanley Pons, Martin Fleischmann and Steven E. Jones did as the first to claim fusion, then follows the worldwide reaction and the field's slide into disrepute, along with the academic politics of the affair. In his view, cold fusion demonstrated only that research can go on even when the phenomenon does not exist, as long as funding is available.

It appears among the books Peter Attia listed in his article on why we're not wired to think scientifically.
