Part memoir, part spiritual manual, Ram Dass's 1971 book on spirituality, yoga and meditation is split into four sections. The first tells how Richard Alpert, a Harvard psychologist who researched psychedelics with Timothy Leary, went to India, met his guru Neem Karoli Baba and was renamed Ram Dass. The second and largest section is an illustrated free-verse sequence of spiritual reflections. The third is a practical guide to yoga, breathing and meditation, and the last is a reading list on religion and consciousness. In print ever since, it has sold more than two million copies and helped bring yoga to baby boomers in the West.
It appears on a published list of 14 books that inspired Steve Jobs, who read widely on spirituality after starting at Reed College.
