About the book
Set in Cincinnati in 1873, Toni Morrison's 1987 novel centers on Sethe, a formerly enslaved woman, and Denver, her daughter of eighteen, in their house on Bluestone Road. For years the house has been haunted by a spirit that mother and daughter take to be the ghost of Sethe's youngest child. Denver, shy and without friends, seldom leaves home; Sethe's two sons ran away by the age of 13. The story turns when Paul D, one of the men once enslaved with Sethe on the Sweet Home plantation, arrives at her door. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, opened a trilogy of novels and became a 1998 film starring Oprah Winfrey.
