Michael Lewis traces the build-up of the US housing bubble through the few investors who saw it coming and bet against it. By the time the crash became public in the fall of 2008, he argues, the real collapse had already happened in bond and real estate derivative markets, where arcane securities rested on piles of doubtful mortgages. His cast includes hedge fund manager Steve Eisman, Deutsche Bank trader Greg Lippmann, former neurologist Michael Burry of Scion Capital, and the Cornwall Capital founders, who started with $110,000 in a garage. He also follows people behind some of the largest losses. It was a New York Times best seller for 28 weeks and became the basis for a 2015 film.
Sheryl Sandberg compared Lewis's knack for simplifying complicated subjects to a magic trick, pointing to his account of the 2008 Wall Street crash. Serial entrepreneur Fabrice Grinda included it among the books he recommends.

Michael Lewis's ability to boil down the most complicated subjects is like a magic trick. You can't believe your own eyes. He takes on important issues - from the 2008 Wall Street crash in "The Big Short" to parenting in "Home Game" - and breaks them down to the deepest truths. His combination of an extraordinarily analytical mind and a deep understanding of human nature allows him to weave together data and events to offer a fresh and insightful narrative. Whatever the topic, the result is always compelling and even thrilling. I am in awe of him.
