About the book
Historian Hampton Sides follows the transformation of the American West in the 19th century, with Kit Carson, frontiersman, wilderness guide and Union Army member, near the center. He sets Carson's role in subduing the Navajo, in the Civil War years and after, inside the wider conquest of the West and the national belief in Manifest Destiny. Sides gives a voice to Native American leaders, and other key figures include the Navajo strongman Narbona, Stephen W. Kearny of the Mexican-American War and the Confederate general Henry Hopkins Sibley. The account covers the siege at Canyon de Chelly and the forced migration known as the Long Walk.
Joe Rogan called it another standout from a stretch of reading he devoted to the Wild West and the conflicts between Native Americans and early settlers.

In the last few months I’ve been obsessed with books on the Wild West and the conflicts Native Americans had with early settlers. This is another amazing one, “Blood and Thunder” by Hampton Sides.
