About the book

Larry Tye follows Robert F. Kennedy from the conservative 1950s to his place as a liberal hero. Raised on the right-wing views of his dynasty-building father, Kennedy started out in public life working as counsel for Senator Joseph McCarthy and ended it campaigning to unite working-class whites with poor Black and Latino voters. Tye drew on 58 boxes of papers locked away for forty years, government files never released and memoirs never published, plus hundreds of interviews with Kennedy intimates such as Ethel, his widow, Jean, his sister, and the aide John Siegenthaler. His shift from cold warrior to liberal also offers a lens on two turbulent American decades. It reached the New York Times best seller list.

Tim Cook said in an interview that he was reading it shortly after it came out, alongside Gandhi's autobiography.

I have two books going right now: One is the Bobby Kennedy book [“Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon,” by Larry Tye] that just came out. The other is quite an old book. It’s a Gandhi book [“Mohandas K. Gandhi, Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments With Truth”] that I got interested in because we went to the Gandhi museum when we were in India recently. I tend to like nonfiction and particularly reading about people and how they lived and how they fought, and what motivated them and their philosophy and so forth.
