About the book

Written privately over seven years, Bruce Springsteen's autobiography takes its title from his 1975 album and song. He recalls a Catholic childhood in Freehold, New Jersey, and the poetry, danger and darkness that fed his imagination, up to what he calls the Big Bang: seeing Elvis Presley make his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. From there he traces his determination to make it as a musician, the years when he led a bar band in Asbury Park, and how the E Street Band rose, and he tells for the first time of the personal struggles behind his best work. Springsteen narrated the audiobook, and the book took the Best Autobiography/Memoir prize at the 2018 Audie Awards.

Andi Dumitrescu, a musician and filmmaker, said in an interview that he was reading it during what he called a physics and biographies period.
