About the book

Set in the fast lane of early 1980s New York City, Jay McInerney's first novel is written entirely in the second person, an unusual choice in English-language fiction. Its protagonist, a writer of 24, checks facts for a highbrow magazine that he had once hoped to write for. By night he uses cocaine and loses himself in the yuppie party scene, often at a nightclub called Heartbreak. His wife, Amanda, a model whose career took off in New York, has recently left him, and he copes by pretending nothing has happened and telling no one she is gone. Vintage Books first published it in 1984, and a 1988 film starring Michael J. Fox followed, with a screenplay by McInerney.

Rich Roll said that when he moved to New York City in 1989, he hoped to feel even a small part of what reading the novel had made him feel.

When I moved to New York City in 1989, all I wanted was to feel a tiny sliver of what it felt like to read Bright Lights Big City.
