Los Angeles is the subject of James Frey's first novel, which moves among dozens of passing characters while staying with a handful of the city's lost souls: a young Mexican-American woman who is bright and ambitious, a self-absorbed action-movie star chasing someone he cannot have, a couple of nineteen-year-olds who flee their hometown for the city's margins, and an aging alcoholic living at Venice Beach, upended when a teenage girl on meth turns up half-dead. The novel also includes brief profiles of minor figures and facts about Los Angeles County. Released by HarperCollins in 2008, it reached the New York Times best-seller list despite mixed reviews.
Ryan Holiday counted it among the best books he read in 2017, saying he loved it so much he stayed up very late at night reading.
