About the book
Set in a Dorset village, Clare Leslie Hall's historical novel moves between the 1950s, when Beth is a working-class teenager in love with Gabriel, a boy from an upper-class family, and 1968, when she is married to Frank, a gentle sheep farmer. Beth is still grieving their son, who died in an accident. After Beth's brother-in-law shoots a dog that was going after their sheep, the dog turns out to be Gabriel's, and he is back in the village as a best-selling novelist with his young son, Leo. Leo reminds Beth of her own boy. To research farm life, Hall spent time with farmers and learned to milk cows.
