About the book
Christopher Knowlton, a former Fortune writer and the author of Cattle Kingdom, examines the Florida land boom of the 1920s and argues that it led directly to the Great Depression. New cities rose out of the wetlands in a decade of excess and sudden collapse, and Knowlton looks at the artistic and business ambitions behind Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Boca Raton and other places. He also covers the darker side: fortunes made and lost, wild nightlife, the ruin of the Everglades and the abuse endured by the largely black workforce that built the boom. Developers such as Carl Fisher, George Merrick and Addison Mizner appear, along with a hurricane he links to the stock market crash.
Morgan Housel described it as the story of America's first modern bubble and noted how closely its characters, incentives and behavior resemble today's world.

Bubble in the Sun. The telling of America’s first modern bubble: the Florida real estate boom of the 1920s. What’s great about this book is that so many of the characters, scenes, incentives, behaviors, and outcomes could be right out of today’s world. Same as it ever was.
