About the book
Medical physicist R.F Mould, who sat on the UK Government Delegation at the first post-accident conference at the IAEA in Vienna, assesses the health, environmental and social effects of the Chernobyl accident. After a brief explanation of its causes and eyewitness accounts, he covers the medical response to acute radiation syndrome among plant workers and liquidators, evacuation and resettlement, the state of the sarcophagus, dose estimation, environmental contamination, psychological illness, thyroid cancer in children and forecast cancer rates in the 21st century. Color photographs show skin damage on firemen, the control room, and the fuel mass known as the Elephant's Foot, sampled using Kalashnikov rifles. Mould visited the plant in December 1987 and June 1998.
Craig Mazin, creator of the Chernobyl TV series, named it among the harder-to-find books that rounded out his research library.
