About the book
Ambrose Bierce, the newspaperman, poet and satirist nicknamed Bitter Bierce for his biting wit, drew on the American Civil War for these stories. Most of the sixteen selections come from his collection Tales of Soldiers and Civilians. The stories include Chickamauga, One of the Missing, Four Days in Dixie, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, A Son of the Gods, The Coup de Grace and A Horseman in the Sky. Bierce piles up suggestive, realistic detail to build grim, vivid tales, often shadowed by fatalism and a sense of coming calamity. His other best known work is The Devil's Dictionary, a gathering of barbed epigrams.
Ryan Holiday read the whole collection in 2012 and said he was blown away by its dark, beautiful writing.
