About the book
Tech writer Clive Thompson studies computer programmers as a tribe: their origins, their ways of thinking, what counts as greatness among them and what should give everyone else pause. He profiles the people behind Facebook's News Feed, Instagram and Google's AI work, and talks with everyone from so-called 10X elites to beginners, back-end engineers and front-end designers. In Thompson's account the vocation combines a love of logic and efficiency, the pleasure of solving puzzles and a huge tolerance for frustration. He also weighs the morality and politics of code, since programmers shape behavior by making some actions easy and others hard, with effects on civic life and the economy.
Tim Ferriss endorsed it, calling Thompson an outstanding long-form journalist and singling out the section on automation, and Wired founding executive editor Kevin Kelly said it decodes the culture of code.
