Company K

William March's first novel draws on his own time as a U.S. Marine fighting in France in World War I. It is built from 113 short vignettes, each told by a different man of the fictional Company K, and together they run from training to life after the war. Many episodes come from events March saw or lived through, and the title comes from the Marine company he served in. The novel is often read as an anti-war book, though March insisted it was grounded in truth and meant as an affirmation of life. It was serialized in The Forum before Smith and Haas published it in full in 1933.
