A short 2007 blog post on Valleywag, the Silicon Valley site of Gawker Media, outed PayPal founder and investor Peter Thiel as gay, and Ryan Holiday traces how that post set off a carefully planned campaign against Gawker. Thiel, who considered the information private, spent years looking for an answer to what he called the Gawker Problem. His chance came when Gawker published an unlawfully made sex tape of Hulk Hogan, and Thiel quietly pitted Hogan against Gawker in a years-long legal fight in Florida. The case ended with a $140 million judgment, Gawker's bankruptcy and founder Nick Denton out of a job. Holiday, who interviewed the key players, treats it as a study in power and strategy.
Marc Andreessen called it a startlingly deep cultural history of conspiracies seen through the Gawker takedown, drawing on full access to the main players. Brian Koppelman, creator of Billions, said every Ryan Holiday book is appointment reading for him.
