About the book

Nelson Mandela's personal archive supplies the material for this collection of journals, diaries, draft letters, recorded conversations and speeches. Journals kept while he was on the run in the early 1960s sit beside writing from Robben Island and other prisons during his 27 years of incarceration, notebooks from the transition after apartheid and papers from his presidency. Notes for famous speeches, doodles made in meetings, photographs and close to 70 hours of taped interviews with friends appear too, along with an unfinished draft for a second volume after Long Walk to Freedom, the 1994 memoir it continues. Barack Obama wrote the foreword to the 2010 book.

Michelle Obama said she turns to it from time to time for an extra boost, and treasures her copy because Mandela signed it and gave it to her when her family visited his home in 2011.

Michelle Obama

I like to flip through it from time to time because it always seems to give me an extra boost when I need it. I cherish this both because it was signed by him and because he gave it to me as a gift when my family visited his home in 2011.
