About the book
Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel centers on Raskolnikov, a poor student consumed by his own nihilism. Persuaded that he stands above the law and that a humane end can excuse any means, he kills an elderly pawnbroker he considers worthless, and the story follows the guilt and terror that take hold of him afterward. The author drew on his own time in prison, and the narrative weaves religious, social and philosophical questions into a struggle between good and evil. He wrote it after a desperate stretch: he had lost his wife and brother, debt had sunk his magazine Epoch, and he had lost an advance at the roulette tables of Wiesbaden. The edition uses the Constance Garnett translation.
