About the book
For a stretch of the 1970s, bombings by homegrown underground groups were a daily occurrence in America, and Bryan Burrough's history covers that decade of left-wing violence and the FBI's campaign against it. The groups include the Weather Underground, the Symbionese Liberation Army, the Black Liberation Army and the Puerto Rican FALN, whose members, most from middle-class homes, planted bombs in places such as the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol and robbed dozens of banks. Burrough also shows the FBI breaking many laws in pursuit of them, often with disastrous results, though his perspective is generally sympathetic to the agents. Many people from both the underground and the bureau speak about their experiences in it for the first time.
