About the book
During his studies at Harvard Business School, Dennis W. Bakke made hundreds of decisions through the case-study method and concluded that making decisions is the best way to develop people. He went on to spread decision-making to people at every level of his organizations, growing AES into a global power company on the Fortune 200 list, with 27,000 employees across 27 countries, and later creating Imagine Schools, the biggest nonprofit charter-school network in the country. The book presents the idea as a leadership fable loosely based on his experience, arguing that key calls on strategy, budgets or pay belong with those closest to the action rather than with the boss.
Buffer co-founder Joel Gascoigne listed it among 50 books that transformed his business and his life, linking it to Buffer's practice of letting anyone make any decision after seeking advice from the people it affects.

Within Buffer, we have a concept where anyone is able to make any decision, provided they get advice from people who will be affected by the decision. It is the way we've found to envision a company without managers or bosses. We're still at the beginning of this journey, it's an exciting one to be on and I think we're creating an incredible company to be part of.
This decision making concept originates from a company called AES. I already mentioned Joy At Work, AES co-founder Dennis Bakke's first book and this is a fable he wrote to describe a company changing how they work and adopting the Advice Process.
