About the book
Japanese designer Kenya Hara stresses the importance of emptiness in Japan's visual and philosophical traditions and shows how it applies to design, using many examples from his own work. Those examples include the programs he designed for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Hara joined the board of MUJI in 2001 and has shaped its identity as an adviser on communication and design ever since, and he has also drawn attention with exhibitions such as Re-Design. Born in 1958 and counted with Naoto Fukasawa among Japan's leading design figures, Hara often pays tribute to his mentors through long overlooked Japanese icons and images.
The Workbench founder and design director Ryan Len named it in an interview as a book he would recommend to young people interested in his profession.
