About the book
John Fante's novel, narrated by Arturo Bandini, opens in Los Angeles in 1934, where the twenty-one-year-old writer works as a busboy at a deli near Bunker Hill. Bandini tells the story himself, starting from what he calls his first brush with fame. It was published in 1982.
