About the book

The second volume of Blanche Wiesen Cook's Eleanor Roosevelt biography covers 1933 to 1938, years of economic depression, the New Deal and the gathering threat of World War II. Cook portrays Roosevelt as wife, mother, policymaker and activist, often taking unpopular stands on racial justice and women's rights that ran counter to her husband's policies.

Ryan Holiday picked it for his list of life-changing biographies, crediting Roosevelt's political and social skill in turning the post of First Lady, which had meant little more than party planning, into a platform for change.

Ryan Holiday (Founder/Brass Check)

The prospects Eleanor Roosevelt faced when she entered the White House were not good. First Ladies hadn’t done anything in decades besides party planning and a few of her predecessors had had nervous breakdowns. She wanted to do something different. This is a book about her political and social acumen–her ability to turn a meaningless position into a powerful platform for change and influence. I read this book and came away so impressed. We can learn a lot.
