The End of Faith

Sam Harris began his critique of religious belief after the September 11, 2001 attacks. He surveys the human readiness to set reason aside for faith even when faith inspires atrocities, from the Inquisition and persecution of witches and Jews to modern terrorism. Harris argues that with weapons of mass destruction in the world, humanity cannot expect to outlast its religious differences forever, and that religious moderation carries dangers of its own, since tolerance of faith hides its part in conflict. He also attacks the Christian right's sway in America. Drawing on neuroscience, philosophy and Eastern mysticism, he calls for ethics and spirituality on secular, humanist foundations. It earned a PEN/Martha Albrand Award for a first work of nonfiction.
