About the book
British biologist Merlin Sheldrake, whose Cambridge doctorate examined underground fungal networks in Panama's tropical forests, looks at fungi from several angles in his first book: decomposition, fermentation, nutrient distribution, psilocybin production, their evolutionary role in plants and the ways humans relate to them. He describes fungi turning rock to soil and wood to compost, linking plant roots in the Wood Wide Web, raising bread, fermenting alcohol and producing penicillin. He also covers their use in building materials and leather and their ability to digest pollutants from crude oil to polyurethane plastics and TNT. The book uses music and philosophy and is partly a personal account. In 2021 it won the Royal Society Prize for Science Books.
Tyler Cowen put it on his list of the best non-fiction books of 2020 at Marginal Revolution.
