Journalist Jeremy N. Smith profiles Christopher Murray, a medical doctor and economist who started the Global Burden of Disease studies to learn what really makes people sick and what kills them. Murray holds that a good life is judged less by its length than by how well it is lived and how free of illness it stays, and that health cannot improve until it is measured accurately. The book follows the scale of the project and its rankings, such as placing the United States 37th among national health systems, along with Murray's clashes with the WHO and the UN. It also covers his backers, among them Bill Gates, who gave him a $100 million grant.

Chris’s story is told well in Jeremy Smith’s book Epic Measures: One Doctor. Seven Billion Patients, which came out earlier this year. It’s a highly readable account for anyone who wants to know more about Chris’s work and why it matters.
