About the book
Wayne W. Dyer's first self-help book, issued in April 1976, holds that feelings are reactions people choose, and that self-defeating habits change only through patience and persistence. Its chapters cover taking charge of oneself, self-love, freedom from the need for approval, breaking with the past, the useless emotions of guilt and worry, and openness to the unknown. Throughout, Dyer lists the payoffs people get from their erroneous zones and offers strategies to drop them, stressing life in the present moment. It stayed on the New York Times best seller list for 64 weeks and reached number one in May 1977. Psychologist Albert Ellis later argued it drew heavily on his Rational Emotive Therapy without credit.
