About the book

In the seventeenth century the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat claimed to have found a marvelous demonstration of a proposition, one that the margin he was writing in was too narrow to contain. The proposition, that the equation xn + yn = zn has no solution when n is 3 or more, became known as Fermat's Last Theorem. It looked simple, yet proving it baffled the finest minds in mathematics for more than 350 years. Simon Singh tells the story of the pursuit of that proof and of the lives that were devoted to it, sacrificed for it and saved by it. The book is based on Singh's award-winning documentary film, which aired on the PBS series Nova.

Chamath Palihapitiya included it in a reply on X that listed three books.
