About the book
Norbert Straumann's textbook is a revised and expanded successor to his earlier General Relativity and Relativistic Astrophysics. Part I develops the foundations of the theory. Part II turns to tests and applications, with a close look at binary pulsars, an introduction to gravitational lensing, and an extended treatment of compact objects and black holes that includes a derivation of the Kerr solution, Israel's uniqueness theorem and the basic laws of black hole physics, and closes with a proof, due to Witten, of the positive energy theorem. Part III supplies the differential geometry. The new edition adds a chapter on cosmology. Its readers are meant to be students of physics, astrophysics and mathematics at undergraduate and graduate level.
