Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World

Anthropologist Jack Weatherford challenges the Western picture of Genghis Khan as a bloodthirsty barbarian and presents him as a visionary ruler whose conquests joined Europe to the cultures of Asia. He follows the Khan's rise on the Mongolian steppe, his military methods built on rapid attack and siege warfare, and an empire that reached from Siberia to India and from Korea to the Balkans. Weatherford credits Mongol rule with wider trade, spreading technology, and lighter taxes and religious tolerance for peoples who submitted at once; resisting cities could be massacred. He draws on The Secret History of the Mongols and other non-Western sources, and ends by tracing how Western views of the Khan changed during the Enlightenment.
